Nottingham received a total of ten entries for the Arena Racing Company Select Stakes and the GWA (Greyhound Writers Association) could face a tricky task in narrowing those entries down to the six runners required to compete for the £12,500 winners purse.
Headlining the entries for the Arena Racing Company Select Stakes will be the 2025 StarSports/TRC Greyhound Derby winner Droopys Plunge, who makes his return to racing at Nottingham on Monday evening.
The Patrick Janssens trained champion hasn’t had a race since his victory in the final at Towcester just over two months ago on June 14th, but has sparkled in a couple of recent workouts, especially last Monday when recording 29.16 (+60) in a solo trial over the 500m course and it was thought that his next engagement would be the Select Stakes, but Janssens this afternoon said " He needs a race before the Select Stakes, he hasn't raced since the Derby Final and needs to go up against other dogs again before then so he runs on Monday".
Of the other nine entries, six of those have been penciled in for a trial before racing on Monday and they include a couple of challengers from across the Irish Sea.
Wicky Ned makes a welcome return to action again having picked up an injury at Shelbourne Park in a recent trial. Jimmy Fenwick's runner was last seen in the UK back on July 6 when winning the Time Nutrition 3 Steps To Victory Final at Sheffield and he lines up in a solo trial over the 500m course, as do the Patrick Janssens pair Slick Sentinel and Romeo Steel, who dipped under the track record for the four bends in a recent trial at Yarmouth, while Romeo Tomcat lines up in a two bend sprint over 305m
Graham Holland heads the Irish Challenge and he sends over Silverhill Freya for a look round the Nottingham circuit. Having won the final of the 10,000 euro Bernard Barry Christmas Oaks at Shelbourne in December, Silverhill Freya has won her last six starts at Shelbourne and Limerick, winning the finals of the Shelbourne Park Regulars A0, and the 2025 Apex Global Resources Ltd Cork Oaks Final, landing 2,000 and 7,000 euros respectively while Pat Buckley's Glengar Martha, if accepted, will be coming over without a look round
Mongys Wild, the winner of three Category One competitions this year, will look to advertise his claims of being named GBGB Greyhound of the Year for 2025 if able to land the Arena Racing Company Select Stayers. Mark Wallis’s staying sensation has only lost one of his eighteen races this year, winning his last thirteen starts, the latest being in the final of the Premier Greyhound Racing Regency at Hove at the beginning of August.
All five of his rivals line up at Nottingham on Monday, three of them in the final of the Arc Six Bend Dual Distance Trophy. Last year's Select Stayers winner Vale Bluebell lines up for Jill Llewellin alongside Kim Billingham-Hine's Beatties Electra and Jason Gray's Loxleys Tempo.
The other two entries, the Patrick Janssens trained Fabulous Heka and Sean Parkers Cesarewitch Runner Up Droopys Flare both trial before racing over 730m and 500m respectively.
