Broadstrand Syd looks the likely favourite from T3 as he bids to follow up his success in this race 12 months ago. In 2024, Syd won his semi-final by six lengths and then landed the €20,000 prize in the final with a one-and-a-quarter length success with Elite Kursk second and Road Exile back in third.
This evening all eyes will be on the John Linehan-trained August 2022 son of Droopys Sydney as he looks to go back-to-back in the competition, something that’s not been achieved since Ardnasool Jet in 2018 and 2019.
T1 – BALLYMAC BRANDAN – Liam Dowling
Brandan is very lightly raced and is open to improvement. He won from T5 in the first-round heats and stayed on well in the second round to qualify in third. The semi-finals saw Ballymac Brandan ping the lids from T3 and make all in 20.94, a repeat of that would put him in the mix this evening.
T2 – DROOPYS PATRIOT – Robert Gleeson
Patriot goes into the final on the back of a flawless campaign over course and distance at Dundalk. 20.88, 21.01, 20.88 and 21.16 wins throughout the competitions from a variety of traps shows Droopys Patriot is a versatile and capable sprinter. If Patriot traps in best fashion this evening, he will have every chance to landing the prize money.
T3 – BROADSTRAND SYD – John Lineham
Another with a flawless passage into the final is defending champion Syd Broadstrand, who lines up from T3. Syd is very consistent on the clock with 20.77, 20.70, 20.91 and 20.91 wins in the competition this year. The John Lineham-trained superstar is looking to go back-to-back in the Irish Sprint Cup and looks a major player. Syd has blistering early pace if he traps its race on.
T4 – STONEPARK BROWNE – Michael O’Donovan
Stonepark Browne goes into the final on the back of first-round and second-round wins and then runner places in the third round and semi-final behind Broadstrand Syd. On those two runs he’s got a couple of lengths to make up on the favourite, but as ever in this type of races it’s all on the break. In the second-round heats, Stonepack Browne pinged the lids from T4. Could a return to the black jacket see a similar break this evening?
T5 – SOUTHWIND WILD – Pat Buckley
Middle seed Southwind Wild bolted up in the first round with a quick away success in 21.13 and then went a spot quicker in the second-round, recording 21.12, making all. The third round saw Southwind Wild finish second behind Droopys Patriot, and it was the same story in the semi-finals, finishing two lengths behind that rival. Southwind Wild is yet to dip below 21 seconds over course and distance, he will need to take a step forward to take this.
T6 – EPIC ACE – Pat Guilfoyle
Middle seed Epic Ace is drawn a little wider than normal out in T6, but that shouldn’t be an issue with four rials and one middle on his inside. In the second-round heats, Epic Ace led late on and clocked 20.97, winning by three quarters of a length. He’s unlikely to lead this evening, but if he's within a length at the first bend, Epic Ace will make his move looking to get up on the line and land the €20,000 to the winner Irish Sprint Cup.
Conclusion
A strong renewal of the Bar One Racing Irish Sprint Cup, and it's great to see such a competitive final. Broadstrand Syd will start as a worthy favourite from T3 as he looks to go back-to-back, but I’m with Droopys Patriot in T2 to rail inside that rival and make all. Epic Ace will be staying on well and could be worth including in forecast bets. Good luck to all owners, trainers and connections involved in the Irish Sprint Cup final at Dundalk this evening.
