Performance of the Week

Two Category One events had action last week. We're starting with the Premier Greyhound Racing Eclipse. Proper Heiress led the way with a 29.17 run. Admittedly, at 1/14 in a four runner race, he did exactly what he should have done, though he was chased home by an Oaks finalist in Raebella Bullet, so there was some quality for him to beat.

The Premier Greyhound Racing Classic at Sunderland was the other Category One event. Santas Amigo was the top performer here for David Mullins, making up for a missed break and a bump in the opening round with a slick display from the front in his semi-final. Youngster Bower Sheeran is worth mentioning, the penny dropping in recent weeks when clad in the red jacket.

Elsewhere in the north east, there was a pair of winning April 24 whelps who have claimed the award. Ballymac Shontae takes the Newcastle nod for Jimmy Fenwick after a flying 28.44. Already an open race winner, hindsight suggests that 11/8 was a gift on Saturday afternoon as she ran riot by four lengths.

Good Chloe has only run three times in her career so far, winning both of her sprint races at Star Pelaw. In a year full of quick times over the sprint trip, her success put her into the top eight runs of 2025. A mention too for Hillside Lily who produced a fifth win in a row on the same night.

At the other end of the scale is Wrighty. John Mullins's veteran is in rude health at present, landing a third win in his last four starts at Yarmouth on Wednesday night. It was an excellent night for top grade races with Craig Morris's Flashing Fender also in winning action. A mention too for a pair of youngsters for Kevin Cobbold in Peppered Bedlam and Wee Mac Katie, who both won in smart times on Monday.

The return to bitches only company on Friday night at Dunstall Park proved to be just the ticket to see Butlers Lane back on the winning trail. Unbeaten though the Premier Greyhound Racing Oaks at the track, she extended her perfect run around England's newest track to five, and is going to prove hard to beat for the foreseeable future there.

The reopening of Suffolk Downs has seen the eight-bend track record fall in back-to-back weeks, with Crafty Prospero smashing the clock for Michelle Brown. Stepped up in trip on just his sixth career start, he has always been one who shaped as if he was going to be an above average stayer from early days.

Speaking of stayers, Vhagar missed out by one spot on equalling the 650m clock at Oxford on Sunday afternoon. Although she stays further, Mark Wallis's star does seem well suited to these slightly shorter six bend distances. She made the Premier Greyhound Racing St Leger final, but her Ladbrokes Summer Stayers success over 630m at Monmore is the pick of her Category One form.

At Central Park on Saturday night, there were a couple of decent performances led by Seamus Cahill's Moving Force. He was a recent Champion Stakes finalist and was taking on one of the top locals in Paul Donovan's Cinderella Tell. She has all the early gears and although the stiff four bends in Kent is a touch too far for her, it was a very smart run from Moving Force to be able to pick her up again.

There was no racing at Hove last week while the track gets some work done, so Ballymac Blanco was seen in winning action at Monmore after his Hove win the week prior. He dug in down the back to get his head in front by the third bend. A classy performer, he was one of the unluckier losers in the Derby earlier in the year, exiting the second round despite going under 29 seconds!

It was a tough call at Romford with an excellent run from Carmelfromcanew over 400m as well as a strong effort from Tiffield Tarquin over 575m. In the end, it was just the former who edged things having landed a Category Three final featuring some in form rivals who have been clocking up the miles on a Friday night at Romford.

Sprinting was the order of the day around the Yorkshire tracks, where Roanna Mamba added to his unbeaten run at Doncaster. He has got the better of Rental Crisis in a couple of those runs, David Fradgely's hound is no stranger to appearances in this column having clocked up the wins himself this year.

At Sheffield there was not a stonewall winning display in any of the Invitational contests, so instead it goes to Crokers Harry who landed a D1 contest in sub 16 seconds. It was his fifth win from just seven runs at Owlerton for Rose Draper having previously seen action at Valley for Steven Howard.

Scuba Stevie takes the Kinsley award, another sprinter! The weather made the task of picking a winner a more difficult one this week with +50 going over four bends on Monday and -30 making an appearance late in the day on Thursday. In the end the vote went to Mark Lyons's near veteran who picked up his first ever win over two bends.

At Towcester, Tre Cool has now kickstarted his career. Carol Weatherall's son of Mustang Jet followed up an A4 win with an A3 success. It has taken a little while for the penny to drop with him but he now really has the bit between his teeth. Bred on the same lines as the same kennel's Hove Puppy Cup winner Trumps Benefit, he looks to have a nice future.

Three more sprinters to close things out, starting with Harlequin Dahy at Swindon. The track was slow on Tuesday night so to stop the clock in 15.45 for the 262m was a smart run, with 20 to come off for the going. He has now won three of his last four runs at D1 level and his eighth win from his last 12 runs overall.

In south Wales, Hawkfield Tiptoe was the pick of the winners at Valley, producing the best of his career so far. He still has a time in the top 20 sprints of the year at Newbridge before arriving at his current home and picked up a D1 last month ahead of this D2 triumph.

Headford Gent closes things out at Harlow, on a week where his is just the pick of the runs given the going allowances for each of the runs in question. Rileys Daughter was a couple of spots quicker on the clock but the going just swung the favour in the direction of Sharon Saberton's performer.
