Cape Island And Glenhead Sam Land The Monday Night Opens At Nottingham

Just the two open races at Nottingham last night with the Arc Winner Of One 480 Trophy going to the Esther Driver kennel with Cape Island (T4) landing the race, recording 28.77. The March 21 son of Droopys Sydney is a very consistent runner around Nottingham and came into the race off the back of an A2 graded win a couple of weeks ago.

Last night, Cape Island broke well and nipped up the inside Ballyhimikin Lee (T3) who led round. Cape Island led out of the second bend and kicked a couple clear down the back straight. Ballyhimikin Lee chased him home but went down by one and a half lengths. Race favourite Witton Gucci (T5) was sent off at 8/15 but was never in contention and finished fifth.

The Arc Maiden Standard Trophy a 8.19 over the four-bend 500 metre trip went to Glenhead Sam (T2) from the Neil Chapman kennel. Sam pinged the lids and moved off at trap rise but with a vacant box on his outside he avoided an early bump. Heading into the first bend, odds-on favourite Phoenix Cowboy (T5) attempted to challenge but Sam railed inside that rival and hit the back straight a couple clear and went onto land this open race for his connections in a time of 29.91 rewarding those that snapped up the 2/1 on offer from bookmakers.

Elsewhere, on the Nottingham card we saw wins for Starcash Best (7/2) in the D1 sprint in a time of 17.96. The handicap at 8.36 was a closely contested affair with a head separating the front three, Burrows Cat got the verdict in T1 aT 2/1 with Rosshill Sue second at 4/1 with race favourite Shockwave Voodoo back in third at 13/8.

Performance of the night goes to Swift Nameless (T5) who took the A5 graded race at 7.11 in 30.72. The lightly raced August 23 son of Pestana is moving through the grades nicely and has recently won in A7, A6 and now A5 company.
