Culture Committee critical of bill to ban greyhound racing in Wales

The GBGB has welcomed “unprecedented criticism” of the proposed Bill to ban greyhound racing in Wales from the Senedd Culture Committee.

In a move which greyhound racing now hopes will see the controversial proposals consigned to the scrapheap, the Senedd Culture Committee criticised the Draft Bill at every level - taking a particularly dim view of the process behind the legislation.

A statement from the Board released early on Friday read: Responding to the Senedd Culture Committee’s unprecedented criticism published today of the draft Bill to ban greyhound racing and the process behind the legislation, Mark Bird, CEO of the Greyhound Board of Great Britain, said: “The Culture Committee have criticised every element of this Bill and how this process is being run. It is clear that they believe this Bill is at risk of being ill-judged and ill-considered legislation if it passed.

“They are as bemused and shocked as everyone else is by the political shenanigans that led to a dodgy backroom deal becoming a dodgy Bill. We urge the Welsh government to see sense and drop this Bill in favour of regulation.”

Separately, cameras from ITV Wales visited Valley Greyhound Stadium on Thursday, conducting interviews and filming footage of the track.

*The Senedd Culture, Communications, Welsh Language, Sport and International Relations Committee report on their scrutiny of the Prohibition of Greyhound Racing (Wales) Bill is expected to be published here at 00:00 on 5th December 2025.
