Family friend Pat Quinn pays tribute

Mick Smith, the former racing manager at a host of tracks including Wembley, Catford, Wimbledon and Doncaster, died earlier today. He was 73.

Starting his career at the old Greyhound Express, London-born Mick began his career in racing offices at Hackney and also spent time at Romford before two spells at Catford, as well as Nottingham, Belle Vue and Hull.

Pat Quinn, a friend of the family, said: “Mick was a lovely man and hearing this news this morning has come like a bolt from the blue.

“My son David worked with Mick at Wembley and he was as good a boss as you could wish for.

“Anyone you knew Mick would remember him as a superb straight-down-the-line racing manager and a real family man.

“I spent a lot of time with the family over the years. I taught his son Mark to fish and we had some good times.

“I opened a Christmas card from the family just yesterday. It is so sad.”
