Graham Banks takes a look through Doncaster’s biggest meeting of the year this evening and brings you his three best bets on the card
*** Cushie Arnie (T5, 6.29pm Doncaster) 4pts
** Mugsy (T5, 8.52pm Doncaster) 3pts
*Epic Rebel (T6, 7.58pm Doncaster) 2pts
The best bet on the card at Doncaster this evening goes in the 6.29pm contest and it could go the way of local trainer Susan Watson and her runner Cushie Arnie
Betting in a maiden sprint may not appeal to everyone, but the claims of Cushie Arnie are hard to ignore. He finished runner up in a tougher invitational race last week and had previously won in graded company, recording 16.95 in doing so and has a good looking draw in his favour. A repeat of that previous winning run would be good enough to see him winning in this contest
The next best on the card also goes in a maiden sprint contest and again, could go the way of a local trainer. Shaun Birks doesn’t have many runners in the Doncaster opens on a Saturday, but his runner Mugsy, could take plenty of beating at 8.52pm
He too has recent winning form in graded action and has a cracking draw out wide to work from with a vacant trap on his inside.
His rivals aren’t the strongest and if he can produce another of his usual fast starts, he will look to be away and gone and is a confident selection
Hopefully landing the treble will be Phil Milner’s Epic Rebel, who goes In the 7.58pm contest
He has suffered a couple of costly defeats over the 483m distance in his last couple of outings and this drop back in distance may not suit his running style, but he did record a useful 27.64 in a recent trial over this distance and a reproduction of that sort of time here can see him proving too strong in the later stages, provided he can gain a clear run round the opening bends
