As we reported last week, greyhound racing in Tasmania is set to be banned from 2029, despite Premier Jeremy Rockliff previously giving this support just a few weeks earlier. Click here to read that article
The petition was created by Claire Robins, and she calls for the Honourable Attorney General of Tasmania, Guy Barnett, to take immediate action to enforce the lobbying code of ethics upon Premier Jeremy Rockliff with a statement below.
The issue
The Tasmanian Liberal Government's recent announcement to phase out greyhound racing statewide by 2029 marks a devastating breach of trust for many.
For generations, families in our rural and regional communities have dedicated their lives to the greyhound racing industry. The Liberal Party, time and again, promised to stand by these Tasmanians, safeguard their livelihoods, and support the cultural heritage tied to this sport. Yet, the abrupt decision betrays these commitments, endangering countless jobs and the fabric of community life.
It is imperative that the Honourable Attorney General of Tasmania, Guy Barnett, takes immediate action to enforce the lobbying code of ethics upon Premier Jeremy Rockliff. These ethical guidelines ensure transparency and accountability, principles that seem to have been overshadowed in these recent developments.
Responsible governance demands that the interests and voices of the people are prioritized, particularly those communities who feel abandoned and unheard. In the event that Mr. Barnett does not act, we call upon Her Excellency, the Governor General of Tasmania, Barbara Baker, to intervene decisively.
By stepping in, Her Excellency would ensure that governance in Tasmania remains rooted in integrity and public trust. The removal of Premier Rockliff from office would be a necessary measure to restore confidence and uphold the democratic values that our state cherishes.
Greyhound racing is not just a sport; it is part of our cultural and economic identity. Its phase-out impacts not only the industry but the families and communities that have relied upon it for decades. We urge those in power to reconsider the timeline for this ban and to actively engage with affected stakeholders in seeking fair solutions.
Strengthened lobbying regulations and adherence to ethical practices are crucial in forging a transparent path forward. We must not allow political decisions to undermine trust or erode our shared heritage. Sign this petition to demand accountability and a just process for Tasmania's communities.
