Greyhounds staying in the kennels again

Freezing temperatures again took its toll on a number of greyhound fixtures on Monday.

Central Park, Dunstall Park, Suffolk Downs, Nottingham and Yarmouth all cancelled planned Monday meetings, as the cold snap showed no signs of abating across many parts of the UK.

Dan Bradshaw, deputy racing manager at Dunstall Park, said the track at Wolverhampton Racecourse faced similar problems to those they experienced on Saturday when forced to abandon the evening card.

“The sheets did their job quite well,” said Bradshaw, “but there were just certain hard spots where the wind and snow had blown them apart causing inconsistencies on the surface and the right option to cancel was made.”

Incidentally, the all-weather horse racing card which was to follow on Monday at Wolverhampton - and due to start at 4pm - was also cancelled due to snow.

The Valley are expecting another hard frost tonight but have made no decision yet ahead of their Wednesday fixture. Some of the other issues at the track like the water supply have been fixed ahead of the card being published.
