Yarmouth trainer Craig Morris last night revealed on his X account that Barntick Bear, who was eliminated from the StarSports/TRC Greyhound Derby on Saturday, has joined his kennels and will be entered for the PricedUp.Bet Derby Plate, which gets underway at Towcester on Saturday.

Morris this morning explained how the chance to buy him came about

“Patrick rang me on Monday to say they might look to sell him, but before going any further and advertising him for sale, he wanted to give me the chance to buy him first. I’ve bought a few off Patrick in the past and he’s happy with how I look after them, which was important to him, so I made a few calls a managed to find a buyer”

Barntick Bear is the current track record holder at Towcester when recording 28.44 back in October and also made the final of the Premier Greyhound Racing Puppy Derby Final at Monmore last March where he finished runner up. He also finished runner up in the Select Stakes at Nottingham in August as well as reaching the final of the Coral Olympic at Hove in December, finishing third under former trainer Patrick Janssens, and he this morning wished the new connections the best of luck.

“He’s a very fast but frustrating greyhound, but the money we received for his can be reinvested in a new purchase. Hopefully he does well for them in the Derby Plate, the owners have paid their money and they can take their chance. There aren’t many that I keep to the end of their career, but when they do go, I want them to go to nice people who look after them. Craig is a trainer with ambition and there aren’t many of those about these days”

Paul Carpenter, one of the former owners this morning said “He’ll be well looked after with Craig. He’s got a great set up, big paddocks and kennels. We’d previously done some business with Craig, and it was extremely important for all of us and Patrick that wherever Bear went he’d be well cared for”

“He’s a special dog. I guess these things just run their course. Owning greyhounds is brilliant fun and the buzz you get seeing your dog win is indescribable. Doesn’t matter if it’s a graded race or an open race. But as we all know it’s a nonprofit making hobby and at times can be costly”

“So if you want to stay in the game there are times when you have to move them on. This approach hopefully then allows you to go again. Bear will now be entered in the Derby Plate for the new owners and nothing would please myself and the entire team more than to see him victorious. He deserves to win a nice competition. As for me personally, I will continue to love the Bear”.
