Heat one of the Angel of The North at 7.27 went to the Jimmy Fenwick kennel with Coppice Saphire. The September 2022 daughter of Ballymac Cashout led at the third bend before powering clear to record a three and a half-length victory with Bluebell Teddy back in second. The winner recorded 28.45 and laid down a marker for the final next week.
The second semi-final at 7.44 was won in impressive fashion by Killieford Hanna who made all clocking 28.54 over the four-bend 480-metre trip at Newcastle. The July 2022 daughter of Droopys Sydney showed nice pace throughout and held off the challenge from Skeard Josie, who finished second down the back straight.
The two remaining places in next week's £7500 to the winner final of the Arena Racing Company Angel of The North went to Dominoh Hoo Hoo and Bogger Darling. Dominoh Hoo Hoo trained by Tom Helibron, paced up well into the first bend and kicked a couple clear off the second. Down the back straight, Bogger Darling (T5) and Tinnock Lynx (T2) challenged but neither could reel in the leader, who went onto record 28.69 and reward those that snapped up the 5/2 on offer from bookmakers.
The Time Greyhound Nutrition Northern Flat semi-finals then took centre stage with the first taking place at 8.19. Jacktavern Chief was sent off as the 8/13 favourite from T5, but he missed the break and eventually finished third and was eliminated from the competition.
Harwick Mighty (28.36) popped out and made all from T4 with pacey wide seed Deliverooo taking second place.
The second semi-final at 8.36 looked like an ultra-competitive race but Droopys Bookem trapped well and led round, and it was all over bar the shouting as the strong staying November 2022 son of Droopys Sydney powered clear to victory in 28.61. Naochra was sent off the 7/4 favourite for the race and booked his place in the final, finishing second.
At 8.54, it was all eyes on Unanimous Leon (5/6) in T1 and Slingshot Shaz (11/10) from T3. The bookmakers made this a match race and that’s exactly how it went with Shaz making all in 28.69 with Leon back in second, beaten by just over three lengths. Both go into next week’s final with live chances.
Heat one of the Arena Racing Company Puppy open race at 6.37 was won by Racenight Jane from T6 in 28.79 with Howay Tonali grabbing second with Sir Chancelot back in third. Heat two at 6.53 was won in impressive fashion by Blackhouse Lewi from T3 in 28.76, a very taking run from the November 2023 youngster. Return Package finished second from T5 with Deerjet Rocket back in third from T1.
Next up was the Arena Racing Company Bitches open race at 7.11 over the four-bend 480-meter trip. Coppice Graice started as the odds-on favourite, but it was Droopys Niece (28.91) who took the race from T2 in a cracking finish. Coppice Gracie will come on loads for that run, Having been off the track since mid-March, she goes into the final with every chance.
Heat two of the Bitches competitive at 9.11 went to Makeit Mead in 29.13 with Slingshot Roxy in second and Ballmac Neems in third.
Two heats of the Arena Racing Company Standard were staged with Unanimous Kai getting up late to take the first in 28.61. The second heat went to Moanteen Webby was made all in 28.49. Tyne Tees Richie, Jeakers Man, Ballymac Lineout and Brinkleys Louis all booked their places in next week's final.
As well as the four finals next Thursday evening, there will be a supporting card full of opens, including a marathon contest over 895m.
£895 will be on offer to the winner of the Arena Racing Company Super Stayers and the one-off Category Three race gives the marathon stars a chance to shine.
Newcastle General Manager Ian Walton said: “We are holding a finals night of open races with enhanced prize money. Winners will all receive a minimum of £500 and others £100, and we are also putting on a marathon over 895m, where we are offering £895 to the winner of the race and £100 others.
"It will be a cracking night's racing”
