Patrick Godfrey kennel update – Minute and Cornflake all set for Monmore
Arthur Minute and Arthur Cornflake will head to Monmore on Saturday evening for the Category One Ladbrokes Summer Stayers Classic and Gold Cup heats.
Arthur Minute lines up from T1 in heat 4 at 7.22 in a star-studded line-up that includes superstar New Destiny in T2, Coral Coronation Cup finalist Cree Bono in T3 and PRG Regency runner-up Romeo Empire from T4.
Speaking to Patrick Godfrey today, he said this about the July 2023 daughter of Coolavanny Hoffa: “I saw New Destiny and Romeo Empire and stopped looking, it’s a hot race. She's young and has only recently stepped up in trip and is up against it here with some of the top six-bend performers in the race.
"I was pleased with her last week, she showed nice pace and stayed on well.
''She could need further in time. At the moment she’s clocking minor open race times so this looks a massive ask, but she's well and takes her chance.’’
Attention then moved onto Arthur Cornflake who lines up from T2 in heat six of the Ladbrokes Gold Cup at 9.39 on Saturday, August 9. Godfrey said: “I’ve had massive problems with him, setback after setback. He had trouble in the English Derby heats and has only run twice since. He needs runs, he’s better than he’s shown recently. At the back end of last year, he was a 28.20 type around Monmore and I thought he could go below 28 seconds with a clear run.’’
Speaking about the injury troubles that have plagued Arthur Cornflake, Patrick Godfrey added: “To be honest, I’m just delighted to have him back. He ripped his stomach muscles and had to have a CT scan and was with the vet for over seven days. At that point, I thought I’d lost him. I’d be delighted if he qualified. If not, we will head back for the supporting opens on finals night.
"Joe (communications manager at Monmore) is a top man, Neil is the restaurant always looks after us, and there's always a good atmosphere at the track, which I love. I like to support Monmore if I can and always try and have a runner or two on their big nights.’’
Another of kennel's leading lights sadly misses out on the upcoming Monmore competitions after a bout of illness. Arthur Job, who finished second in the Time Greyhound Nutrition 3 Steps To Victory at Sheffield, was due to run at Monmore recently, but Patrick said: “He seemed flat on Saturday and was sick on Sunday so we didn’t run him. The plan was to see how he went and enter either of the competitions but sadly he misses out. He seems better now, so let's see. We might go to Swindon for a trial and then aim him at the Vixons Contracts Ltd Trophy over the four-bend 480-metre trip at Monmore.’’
Speaking about Arthur Job finishing fourth behind Proper Heiress in the Coral Sussex Cup, Godfrey said: “He just doesn’t seem to run Hove; he trialled OK but met trouble behind Proper Heiress, who was an impressive winner.’’
One that could be back to action soon for the Godfrey kennel is Arthur Lobster. The July 2023 daughter of Crossfield Dusty is blessed with blistering early gears and Patrick has this to say: “She will be back on the track soon following season. I might go to Romford with her. She's got plenty of early pace and has a sectional below four seconds at Swindon, but she only just about sees out the trip. I think 400 metres at Romford would be ideal for her.’’
