Proper Heiress all set for Shelbourne Park trial

The Mark Wallis-trained Coral Sussex Cup-winning railer Proper Heiress is booked in for a 550-yard trial at Shelbourne Park on Saturday, August 16, ahead of a potential crack at the Boylesports Irish Greyhound Derby which starts a week later.

€125,000 is up for grabs and the MWD Partnership-owned Proper Heiress has his sights firmly set on the prize, looking to add the Irish Greyhound Derby to the list of multiple Category One wins already on his CV.

The September 2022 son of Droopys Sydney and Powerful Mush has four Category One wins to his name, including recently landing the Coral Sussex Cup around Hove over the 515m trip. Prior to winning the Sussex Cup, Proper Heiress also won the Coral Olympic at the Nevill Road venue Hove and the Ladbrokes Winter Derby at Monmore, plus the ARC Kent Plate at Central Park.

In recent years, English runners in the Irish Greyhound Derby have been very limited. In 2024 March On Freddie crossed the Irish Sea for a tilt at the competition and reached the semi-finals before being eliminated finishing fifth. Another notable English raider was Roxholme Barkley back in 2016 for trainer Hayley Keightley. Kinda Ready who won the 2009 Blue Square English Greyhound Derby was a runner from the Wallis kennel back in 2010.

Going back even further in the record books, Westmead Hawk reached the final in 2005, finishing fifth behind He Said So. The last winner from England was Toms The Best back in 1997, taking the final at 4s for trainer Nick Savva.

Sponsors of the 2025 Irish Greyhound Derby BoyleSports make Proper Heiress 25s in the outright betting market. Bockos Diamond heads the betting at 4s, Callaway Knegare is a 10s chance with Cheap Sandwiches in next at 12s. BoyleSports are offering each way terms of ¼ odds first 6 so the 25s on offer about the potential English raider Proper Heiress could tempt a few in.
