The Category One is coming thick and fast at the moment and the PGR Kent Derby kicks off with six heats at Central Park this evening.

All eyes will be on Irish raider Bombay Pat at 7.05 as he clashes with Romeo Alliance and the exciting Turnthemagicon and that should be a race to saver.

It may be one to sit out from a punting point of view, though, and of more appeal is Headford Dane (T1), who is fancied prove too good for his rivals in heat three at 7.25. Maxine Locke’s dog returned from a layoff to add the Ladbrokes Gold Cup crown to his Ladbrokes Puppy Derby success, and has now won both competitions he has entered. He warmed up for this event with a pleasing C&D success a fortnight ago and, expected to come on for that first outing in nearly a month, he should go well from the front end here.

Derby winner Droopys Plunge goes in heat five at 8.05 but preference is for his kennelmate Romeo Tomcat (T4), who has the early speed to get first run on his rivals. Despite a poor break in the final, he did just that when completing an unbeaten run through the Yorkshire Derby at Doncaster last Saturday and he won his only previous start at this venue with ease. The Patrick Janssens-trained dog should get plenty of room early doors with Gingers Prince expected to be edging left on his inside and that can pave the way for him to turn in front.

Burrows Charm (T2) arrives on the back of finishing second to Romeo Steel in the East Anglian Derby and he can land the final heat at 8.25. Jason Heath’s runner moved well in a trial here last Saturday and should come on for that first look round, while this doesn’t look the strongest of heats.
