Schooling over hurdles set for Star Pelaw
Schooling trials over hurdles is the plan at Star Pelaw as the north east track targets the reintroduction of jumps racing to the sport.
After another busy week at the Chester-le-Street venue, racing manager Dave Gray said: “After Thursday’s successful trials of the newly installed hurdles, we are now looking to get started with schooling trials over hurdles being offered at pre-meeting trials on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.
“We’ve had plenty of interest and are hoping this will convert to actual numbers of greyhounds looking to school over the obstacles.
“Duncan Gibson, the GBGB’s senior stipendiary steward who was in attendance for the trials last week, offered plenty of advice to us and suggested some tweaks which we’ll implement to enhance things going forward.”
As for the racing at Star Pelaw over the weekend, Gray said highlight was the victory on Saturday of Tom Heilbron's ultra-consistent and classy Unanimous Leon,
“He’s a proper dog and took a particularly strong looking one-off open in a very smart 25.42,” said Gray.
“It again just highlighted the fact that some of the top trainers are not frightened to race their kennel stars round our pretty unique track. We are grateful of Tom's continued support of what we're trying to achieve at Star Pelaw.
“The all-graded card on Sunday was also very decent with training honours going to Rob McCarthy with a four-timer. Never Despair, a particular favourite of mine, is a greyhound of not huge ability but the trainer has persevered and improved him enough to win a race. Fantastic!”
