Defending champion Rocky eyes famous double

ROMEO STEEL is generally favourite to claim a third Category One victory when he goes in Sunday’s heats of the BGBF British Bred Derby at Towcester.

Patrick Janssens’ runner, already winner of the Steel City Cup and Yarmouth Derby, lines up in the second of six heats of the £10,000-to-the-winner event for British-breds which has switched from Sheffield to Towcester this year.

The 500m competition replaces the scheduled Stud Book Trophy at the Northamptonshire venue and Romeo Steel is already a major winner over the trip, too, having won the BGBF TruFrame Champion Stakes on Derby final night in June.

The Janssens team look particularly strong with litter brothers Romeo Alliance and Romeo Ability also in the line-up. The former won the JR Racing Juvenile Classic over the same trip earlier this year and takes his chance in heat four on Sunday.

King Memphis, a finalist in the 2024 Star Sports English Greyhound Derby, makes his return to Towcester off the back of a slick 28.86sec (calc) trial last week, while defending champion Keefill Rocky goes for Phil Milner against Romeo Alliance in heat five.

*bet365: 15-8 Romeo Steel, 4 King Memphis, Romeo Alliance, Romeo Ability, 12 Keefill Goose, Keefill Rocky, 20 Venetian Will, 33 bar.

*Ladbrokes bet: 6-4 Romeo Steel, 4 Romeo Alliance, Romeo Ability, 5 King Memphis, 14 Keefill Goose, Venetian Will, Keefill Rocky, 25 Signet Morgan, 33 bar.
