Wicky Ned ruled out of Irish Derby

Wicky Ned will no longer have a tilt at the BoyleSports Irish Derby later this month.

Jimmy Fenwick’s star had a four-bend trial at Shelbourne Park last weekend and picked up an injury that requires a couple of weeks off.

Initially thought to be a tear, it has now been confirmed that the 2024 Greyhound of the Year has pulled a muscle but that is still enough to rule him out of a crack at Irish Classic, which gets underway a fortnight today.

Speaking to the Racing Post, Jimmy Fenwick said of his star, “He’s pulled a muscle on his lower bicep.

“I’ve worked on it with our lasers for about three days and when it was checked (on Wednesday), it seems he’s responded quite well. However, it’s still going to mean two weeks off anyway before it gets rechecked and that put Shelbourne out of the running.

“You’ve got to be a sound dog going into a Derby, and not just that but running in top form. With two weeks out anyway that’s not going to happen, so under the circumstances that’s that.”
