Gingers Prince has been retired

Gingers Prince, last year’s BetGoodwin Pall Mall champion, has been retired after sustaining a gracilis injury in a trial at Hove last week.

Patrick Browne’s top-notch performer, owned by Alan Lucas, enjoyed a higher fruitful career and will always hold a special place in the hearts of the Browne family having being responsible for landing the Dorset kennel with their biggest win and first Category One triumph in the famous Oxford event.

“That was such a special day - and we went through a whole raft of emotions,” said Jade Browne, wife and assistant trainer to Patrick. “Our Rapido Ali had been injured in the race before the Pall Mall final - he’s now enjoying a lovely retirement with his owner incidentally - but we were all over the place heading into Prince’s run.

“And then he’s produced a phenomenal run to pick up such an amazing dog as Rioja Oisin to win our first major trophy, digging deep to win. It was an incredibly emotional 20 minutes - lots of tears, but definitely tears of joy when Prince won!

“He’s definitely the best dog we’ve had. We had a great time with Newinn Tik Tok who made numerous finals - and, to be fair, so did Prince. But he ended up winning one - and his story was just amazing,” added Browne of the the December 2022 son of Ballymac Cashout and Mystical Luna.

She said: “He made the Romford Puppy Cup towards the backend of 2024 but then broke a shoulder blade and we thought his career might be over. He had months off but healed well, just loves the game, flourished in trials, and we put him straight into the Pall Mall - and he won it. Amazing really.

“He later made the Monmore Gold Cup final as well so was always racing in the best company and more than holding his own. He was probably rails-dependent but having said that his early pace took him clear if he was pitched in the middle sometimes. His middle pace was just incredible and we’ve been lucky to have him.

“We’d been looking at the Winter Derby at Monmore so it’s gutting, but we’ve got plenty to look back on with him. He’ll make a full recovery and will be homed - we’ve got a few takers already I believe having spoken to Alan. He’s such a popular dog.

“And thanks also to Alan who’s a massive supporter of the kennel. We’re ever so grateful to him and it’s been an honour to train Prince and get him to land Alan’s first Category One as well.”
