Although the Belinda Green kennel enjoyed a record year in terms of volume of open race winners in 2025, the near misses in the big competitions have left the team frustrated.

Green frustrated despite record year

Hove trainer Belinda Green is having a record year for the kennel on the open-race scene but still admits to frustration in terms of near misses in the major competitions.

Bonus Bullet was the Sussex kennel’s 100th open-race winner when winning her heat of the bet365 Puppy Oaks at Oxford, only to exit the competition at the semi-final stage on Sunday in third place - just missing out of a crack at the £10,000-to-the-winner Category One prize.

“And I suppose that sums up the year in many ways, another near miss,” she said. “It’s been a long frustrating year, so it’s nice to come out of it with the achievement of hitting a personal best of open-race wins with the team we’ve got here - and they’ve all played their part.

“A lot of thanks goes to Gary, Natasha, Belle and Callum - plus, of course, a massive shout out to our owners who have supported us through wins and losses.

“We’ve some amazing owners around us at the moment. They are genuinely lovely people who we really enjoy the experience with, especially a certain Billy Boyle who has supported us from the start and is a big part of the team.

“We have some really nice looking youngsters to go to war with next year. We’re going to enjoy our Christmas and come back fighting in the new year.”

Gary The Arb looks set to once again head to Romford with the Coral Essex Vase on the horizon having trialled back well at Hove last week.

A multiple big-race finalist for Green’s team, Garry Smith’s runner posted 16.38sec in a comeback sprint trial at the seaside track on Monday.
