Arthur looking to do a job on his rivals in the 3 Steps To Victory Final

Patrick Godfrey kennel update - Arthur Job all set for Sheffield on Sunday.

The Patrick Godfrey-trained Arthur Job who is still officially a puppy until tomorrow, yesterday, qualified for the £10,000 Time Greyhound Nutrition 3 Steps To Victory final, which will take place next Sunday over the six-bend 660-metre trip at the Owlerton stadium Sheffield.

The July 2023 son of Coolavanny Hoffa has kept good company during his racing career. Back in March Arthur Job ran in the Monmore Puppy final where he finished third at 20/1 behind Headford Dane from the Maxine Locke Kennel. Arthur Job also made it through to the third round of the £175,000 Star Sports / TRC English Greyhound Derby at Towcester during May before elimination behind Bubbly Charger.

It was then all eyes on the JR Racing Puppy Trophy heats at Towcester earlier this month. Arthur Job lined up from T3 but met early trouble and was knocked out of the competition.

Speaking to trainer Patrick Godfrey this morning about the 3 Steps To Victory heats that took place yesterday afternoon, Pat said: “He’s come out fine, and we head into Sundays final full of hope. He’s still a pup until tomorrow and maybe this has come a year too early for him, but who knows? He’s got lots of potential and has the pace to cause a shock as he showed earlier in his career, winning at 22/1 around Monmore, beating Romeo Tomcat over 480 metres in a Puppy Open.

“Arthur Job isn’t draw-dependent, so T5 is not a concern. Whether he can back run some of these is another matter. He hasn’t got the early to lead them and is unlikely to back run them. It’s a hot hot race. Wicky Ned wasn’t stopping in the semi-finals, so again, maybe this is a year early for Arthur Job.

“We are pleased to be in the final. It’s a very competitive race, and it’s good that we are part of that having such a small kennel strength.

“The 660-metre trip might be a little too much at the moment. He’s strong over four-bends and stays on well but this is an unknown.’’

Moving onto a general kennel update, Godfrey added: “Arthur Cornflake is from the same mother as Arthur Job (Designer) and is a nice prospect. He went over to Shelbourne Park for the Boylesports Irish Greyhound Derby in 2024 and finished in a dead heat third with Dashing Toro in the second-round heats, and we were not able to get back for the re-run because of travel and timing issues, so sadly he missed out. Since then, he's had a couple of runs at Monmore at the back end of 2024 and then had a winter setback. He’s fine at home, will be checked on Thursday with the prospect of a sprint trial at Swindon soon.’’

Arthur Lobster was all set for the Pall Mall at Oxford but has broken into season. Patrick Godfrey said: “She has massive early pace, including a flying 3.98 sectional at Swindon. She seems like an ideal Romford or Oxford type, so it’s a shame to miss out on the upcoming Pall Mall. She will be a proper competition type in the coming months once fully fit.’’

Speaking about Arthur Minute Patrick Godfrey said: “She can run, she’s quick but has only really done it in trials so far, but she is a nice type.’’

Moving onto a general chat about the kennel and rehoming, Patrick Godfrey shared his passion for finding a forever home for all his greyhounds. Speaking about Arthur Cucumber, Godfrey said: “He’s fit and well. We look after them and with Swindon closing down, we don’t want to sell him and see him running low grade in 6 to 12 months’ time, it’s not about money its about that forever home.’’

Godfrey also touched on Arthur Coconut: “He didn’t take to racing and needed to requalify, so we didn’t mess about, we had a good home lined up so she only raced once.’’

Arthur Trifle is another from the Godfrey kennel whose time on the track has come to an end in the last 12 months or so and Patrick said this about the April 2020 son of Tyrur Big Mike: “He doesn’t like change so he’s the kennel dog now, we’ve kept him at home, and it works well.’’

Arthur Pickle is another that’s found her forever home. Godfrey said: “She is now enjoying life on the sofa and enjoys the odd treat like poppadom's! “We keep in touch, and it’s lovely to see her happy and settled.’’
