The BetGoodwin Challenge Trophy final takes place on Saturday evening at 8.57 with the winner taking home the £2,500 prize.
The semi-finals took place last Saturday at Towcester. In the first heat at 8.06, kennelmates Vhagar and Bombay Nutty lined up from traps three and four and the bookmakers could hardly separate the Mark Wallis-trained runners. At lid rise Vhagar went ping! She was a couple clear at the corner and seven clear as she hit the winning line for the first time. Vhagar went on to win by just over seven lengths in 42.21 with Breton Molly chasing her home in second. Bombay Nutty finished third and grabbing that all-important qualifying spot.
The second semi-final at 8.22 saw Savana Jackpot stay on well to pick Amazing Zeus who led from the second bend until the run-in. Savana Regimental, kennelmate of the winner, stayed on to grab second late on. The winning time for Jackpot was 42.61, 40 spots slower than Vhagar the race before, but they have very different running styles, so that's something to consider for the final.
The final is all about the break. Three railers and three middle seeds line up looking to land the £2,500 prize money. If Vhagar (T6) brings her trapping boots it could be all over bar the shouting off the second bend. If she slightly misses it and Amazing Zeus leads round this will be wide open with all in with a chance.
Breton Molly (T1) from the Patrick Janssens kennel could attract support at the current odds. She’s a very consistent course and distance performer and has chased home Savana Jackpot on numerous occasions recently, if she pops out and holds the rails Molly could lead round and cause an upset.
Amazing Zeus (T2) from the Richard Rees Hove kennel is an interesting runner. The May 23 son of Good Cody is lightly raced and open to improvement. Last time out in the semi-finals he outran his odds and could do the same on Saturday with a smart exit.
Savana Jackpot (T3) from the Diane Henry kennel stays well, if he turns within striking distance look out for this runner flying home off the final bend. The key for Jackpot backers is a clear run, if he avoids a bump at the first and second bends he can move into a challenging pitch and look to hit the front late on.
Bombay Nutty (T4) could prove popular at the current prices, if Nutty traps in best fashion and leads round he’s a could prove hard to peg back. A 15.80 sectional on the June 1 highlights the starting ability of Bombay Nutty. If trainer Mark Wallis can get a ping break from this middle seed that 9/2 on offer will look huge value.
Savana Regimental (T5) has won from the front and from off the pace over this six-bend 712 metre trip at Towcester. The middle seed will need to trap well to clear those drawn on his inside, if that happens he will go close. The 10/1 on offer from the bookmakers will surely tempt a few in.
Vhagar (T6) caught the eye during the Derby and looked a top six-bend prospect. On the 1st June over course and distance Vhagar trapped well, led round and went on to clock 42.61. Next time out in the semi-finals of this competition Vhagar pinged the lids from T3, recorded a flying 15.59 sectional and 42.21 clock, a repeat of that run will make her very hard to beat. The middle seed is drawn wider than normal here, all eyes will be on the break.
Good luck to all owners, connections and trainers with runners in the £2500 final of the BetGoodwin Challenge Trophy final at Towcester on Saturday evening.
