Betting Preview – Coral Sussex Cup and Premier Greyhound Racing Regency
The draws have been made, and the bookmakers have priced up, so let's take a look at the two Category One competitions that start at Hove on Saturday evening.
The Sussex Cup is a prestigious greyhound racing competition held annually at Brighton and Hove Greyhound Stadium in East Sussex. Inaugurated in 1972 and classified as a Category One competition, it attracts elite four-bend performers. Run over the 515m trip, the competition offers significant prize money with £10,000 up for grabs.
Previous notable winners include Toms The Best in 1997 and Westmead Maldini in 2012, both trained by Nick Savva. Back in 2007 Barnfield On Air delivered one of the finest performances in Sussex Cup history, setting a track record 29.30, over the 515m trip. Between 1998 and 2004 the event was sponsored by Chas Miller Bookmakers, with Coral then taking over in 2005.
Moving onto this year’s competition, let’s look at the outright betting market (best prices)
Proper Heiress 9/4, King Memphis 11/2, Slick Sentinel 6, Romeo Tomcat 13/2, Gary The Arb 12, Chelms Bear 16, Kilmore Dancer 16, Newinn Benni 18, Ballymac Kobe 18, Missile One 18, Ballymac Axel 25, Uncle Freddie 33, Teddie 33, Queen Shakira 33, Arthur Job 40, Hopes Ompaloompa 40, No Better Feeling 40, Kevins Rocket 50, Ower Cracker 50, Gun Slinger 50, Ballydarley Jack 66, Quill Quids 66, Golden Palace 66, Bower Gift 80, Ower Mystery 80, Brinkleys Betty 100, Razldazl Barkley 100, Tea For Me 100, Mossrich Kylie 100, Slick Sabo 100, Dazl Hermes 125, Zsuzsi 125, Antigua Froky 125, Burrows Emerald 125, Amazing Force 175.
Proper Heiress heads the market as the Mark Wallis-trained railer looks to land yet another Category One success. Back in December 2024, Proper Heiress made all in the Coral Olympic final to take home the £10,000 prize money. Proper Heiress was then aimed at the Ladbrokes Winter Derby at Monmore, and it was another quick away made all success for the September 2022 son of Droopys Sydney.
In late March, Proper Heiress made it three Category One wins in just a few months when he yet again made all and took home the prize money at Central Park in the Arena Racing Company Kent Plate. The Time Greyhound Nutrition Juvenile Championship was next up and Proper Heiress brought his trapping boots again and made all, beating subsequent Star Sports / TRC English Greyhound Derby winner Droopys Plunge by just over two lengths in 28.62.
Can Proper Heiress take the Sussex Cup or is the value elsewhere?
It’s an intriguing competition with plenty in with leading claims, including the Patrick Janssens-trained flying machine Romeo Tomcat, who has won three on the bounce at Hove in recent weeks. The June 2023 son of Dorotas Wildcat is capable of winning from the front or from off the pace. He looks the type to go deep in the competition.
Recent Time Greyhound Nutrition 3 Steps To Victory finalists Chelms Bear (16), Kilmore Dancer (16) and Arthur Job (40) appeal at double-figure prices. They all stay well and could appeal to those looking at each way betting options.
At fancy prices, how about recent Coral Coronation Cup finalist Teddie from the Belinda Green kennel. She has a tricky draw to overcome on Saturday evening, running from T4 in heat one at 7.49 but the 33s available could tempt a few in.
Premier Greyhound Racing Regency
Run over the six-bend 695-metre trip, the Regency is a Category One event that attracts the top staying performers in the country. Inaugurated in 1948, the competition was originally for British Bred Greyhounds before switching to all-comers in 1966. Past notable winners include Scurlogue Champ in 1985, Flying Winner (2009), Blonde Fletch (2011), and more recently Space Jet in 2023.
Outright betting (best prices)
Mongys Wild 11/10, Vhagar 7/2, Romeo Empire 13/2, Garfiney Blaze 12, Bombay Nutty 16, Alright Gordy 25, Borna Parachute 25, Newinn Cloud 25, Proper Dangerous 25, Breton Molly 33, Tuono Bella 33, Commanche 33, Gothic Kitty 50, Droopys Invent 50, Crafty Prospero 66, Burrows Eclipse 66, Rules For Some 66, Swift Jarvis 66, Soul Choice 80, Minstrels Six 80, Art Riddler 80, Ivy Hill Cherry 100, Miss Syd 100, Lilys Bullet 100, Ower Smasher 100, Barbie Bullet 125, Alright Irene 200, Tato Komodo 200, Dazl Rolex 250, Dazl Twink Star 250, Best Miney 250, Razldazl Amanda 250, Kates Bart 250.
Mongys Wild heads the betting as the Mark Wallis-trained flying machine bids to land yet another Category One success. The October 2022 son of Roxholme Olaf has won 10 races on the bounce, including wins in the Golden Jacket at Monmore and Time Greyhound Nutrition TV Trophy at Towcester. Mongys Wild has won over a variety of trips in recent months: 684m at Monmore, 712m at Towcester and 942m at Towcester. This six-bend 695-metre trip at Hove will be ideal. If he avoids trouble, he is surely the one they all have to beat.
Kennelmate Vhagar is next in at 7/2. She shows plenty of early pace in her races and recently beat Mongys Wild a neck in a four-bend trial.
Romeo Empire has won three on the bounce over course and distance and could attract support at 13/2 with bet365. Ladbrokes and Coral go much shorter at 11/2 about the Patrick Janssens-trained railer.
Of those at bigger prices, Borna Parachute (25) could go well and Rules For Some could be worth a small each-way play at 66 with the bookmakers offering ¼ odds and first 4 places in the outright market.
George Smith of Entain had this to say about the upcoming Category One competitions: “This year’s Regency and Sussex Cup are full of talent with Marks Wallis duo Mongys Wild and Proper Heiress heading the market, who have both seen their fair share of support backed from 6/5 into EVS and 11/4 into 9/4 respectively. Others that top the market in the Regency include Vhagar and Romeo Empire, who have both recently stepped up to 6 bends and seem to have found their place, both with a 100% strike rate over 4 races each. Currently, it will be a good result if one of them can get the better of Mongys Wild, but we will have to see what the book looks like come Saturday.
The Sussex Cup sees the return of King Memphis after his freak injury before the Derby and is 2nd fav to Proper Heiress. Both Olympic winners over course and distance, Heiress has seen support while Memphis has been friendless at 9/2 so far.
Slick Sentinel is next in the betting at 6/1 and looks to be back to his best after impressive 500m and 515m wins at Hove in recent weeks and will be a big player. The comp is full of talent with real chances for a lot of runners, so it should be an exciting couple of weeks racing.’’
