Derby final night headlines the week

Two new track records were set at Towcester on Saturday night. Start The Engine broke the relatively new 460m distance and Droopys Rated in the Dorando breaking his own clock for the 942m trip of the Dorando Marathon.

Despite those track records, there only dog who we can possibly give POW to at Towcester is Lennies Eddie for his brave front-running success in the Star Sports & Orchestrate Ltd English Greyhound Derby. Paul Hennessy produced his winner to perfection, getting the best break out of him all competition to land the money.

It was a good week for the litter as litter brother Good Acclaim returned to action at Nottingham on Monday with a bloodless success over 305m. He has still only been beaten once in a sprint contest, continuing in the mix for the top two bend performer in the country.

Romford's six bends is a perfect fit for Mad For Cash who picked up another win at the London Road venue on Friday night. She has won five of her 11 starts over 575m with two of those wins in the top five runs of the year over the distance with her effort last week slotting in at number three.

Another who has built up a solid level of work at a southern track is Brunch Pal. Central Park continues to be a very happy hunting ground for him, successful for the ninth time on Saturday night. He has been an excellent addition to the Dave Lee kennel over the last six months.

At Hove there was a very smart win from Alright Bullet. An August pup, he had produced some smart form around Towcester last month ahead of this run on the south coast, with just eight quicker times so far in 2026 over the 500m distance than his Thursday night success.

That same night saw an impressive six-bend debut at Monmore from Face The Storm. He had won a single time in 11 starts over four bends but regularly gave the impression that the move up in distance was going to be a big help to him. Dipping under 38 seconds at the first attempt marks him down as a serious type for staying races coming up.

There was a fifth straight success over Sheffield's 480m for Grantstown Cross on Sunday afternoon. He made it no further than the opening round of the Derby, drawn in the same heat as Ballymac Deniro, but the return to Owlerton has lit him up with some impressive front-running performances.

Elsewhere in Yorkshire there was a very smart win from Up Quick at Doncaster. He had looked no more than fair in a couple of sprint runs at Central Park but the different traps at Doncaster saw him out and gone in impressive fashion. He produced a time 13 spots off the quickest of the year on a track that was subsequently rated -10.

Further north at Sunderland and it was Frenchyarrow who picked up the performance of the week prize for a run that was the third quickest of the year so far over 450m. He has quietly gone about his business at the track this year with this his third time in the top 18 clockings.

Down the road at Star Pelaw there was some smart times over all three distances. It was difficult to choose between some of the efforts but eventually we came down on the side of Swift Yawn over 590m whose win took over the top spot in the 2026 standings by a single spot.

There were only a couple of opens at Yarmouth last week but the win from Royal Hotshot was solid enough to take the prize, despite being a bit of a surprise to punters having been allowed to go off at 9/1. It was her first race at the track since the middle of February, looking to enjoy being back on the east coast.

Much further up the east coast, Elusivenomore claimed an A1 contest at Newcastle to take the first prize. It was just the second graded run for the 2025 Gymcrack winner, behind POW victor Zenith Tanju a week back. With that one a non runner this week, he found the coast clear to take a win, though only by a short head from the running on Greenwell Tyson.

Dunstall Park saw a very smart sprint time from Castell Maggie. She produced her best time at the track with a sizzling 15.75 clocking which would not have been out of place in the earlier rounds of the Dunstall Dash which Good Acclaim won back in April.

Another to pick up a decent win in a sprint was Front Risk, picking up a victory at Harlow. It was a fourth win in the career of the youngster who had shown that he is capable of a good level of form when running fourth in a Central Park open back in March.

There was a sub 28-second time at Kinsley from Killieford Negri who landed an A4. He was runner-up in an A3 on Sunday when trying to double up on the week in race number 119 in his career. A July 22 whelp, he is clearly still on good terms with himself just a few weeks away from being a veteran.

Pandy Chris was just six spots off the quickest sprint time this year at The Valley last week, producing his quickest run since January in a D2 success and the best effort to this point of his career.
