Broadway puts on another show in Sunday Towcester Opens
The final open race action at Towcester before the start of the StarSports/TRC Greyhound Derby on Thursday evening took place yesterday afternoon with six open contests in front of a very healthy crowd, which bodes well for the forthcoming Derby.
There were several impressive performances in victory at the Northamptonshire venue, with Sean White’s Broadway Murty (1/2F) arguably stealing the show, recording a new fastest time of the year for the 270m distance when overcoming a potentially tricky draw being out in Trap 4, pinging the lids and making all the running for a 4 ¼ length victory in a time of 15.50. That was his third win in a row, his fourth in last five starts having been off since December.
Keylogues Runner (4/9F) lines up in the Derby on Saturday in Heat 27 with Graham Holland’s impressive winner from last week’s Trial Stakes, Bombay Pat likely to go off at short odds, but faced nothing of the same calibre yesterday. Having gone close to making all the running previously when just picked up by the Patrick Janssens-trained Romeo Empire, he went one place better yesterday showing good early pace to lead and was never in any danger as he crossed the line in front by 3 ¼ lengths to, recording 29.12 in the process.
Recording a similar time for a first victory was Pat Curtin’s Timmys Hunter (4/5F). He looked to be an unlucky loser when finding trouble at the first bend last week behind Maxine Locke’s Indian Bonnie, but he landed some compensation for that here, when blasting clear from the traps, and with nothing around him at the bends this time, he was able to stride clear to build up a winning advantage of 4 ½ lengths at the line in 29.11.
Another runner who made all the running over the 500m distance was Heather Dimmock’s Jacktavern Pele (7/2), showing good early pace to build up an early lead, but had to hold off the efforts of Laurence Tuffin’s Fabulous Livia, who reduced the margin down to a short head at the finish. The winner had been in good form in graded action in recent weeks, but this open victory made it three wins in his last four starts.
The remaining 500m contest went the way of Seamus Gaughan and his Unlikely Barry (7/1) who landed his first open race contest when making all the running for a comfortable four-length victory, stopping the clock in 29.75.
Fabulous Spell (7/2), trained by Laurence Tuffin was the other winner on the card when landing a four-runner 712m maiden contest by a wide margin 8 ¾ lengths. Having led in the early stages, she skipped clear round the opening bends, and while the three other rivals were taking care of each others chances, she made her way home unchallenged to score in 43.33
