Carrick Fergie went fastest in the heats of the Time Greyhound Nutrition 3 Steps To Victory at Sheffield.
The opening round of this unique tri-distance event was run over 480m and Garry Hamilton’s dog set the standard with a flying 27.38 (+10).
The 9/4 chance was up against ante-post favourite Wicky Ned but he caught a flying start from trap three and raced into a healthy lead. Jimmy Fenwick’s dog chased hard and closed the gap to three-quarters of a length at the line but winner had got clear beyond recall. Clona Curly was a long way back in third.
Chelms Bear (7/2) was next quickest as he stayed on well to score in 27.49 (+10).
Wraysbury Angel blazed a trail at 25/1 but the Craig Morris-trained winner was always well placed in behind and took it up from the third bend before powering home to beat that outsider by four and a quarter lengths, 13/8 favourite Table Toppers came home in third.
Kilmore Dancer justified 4/9 favouritism with an impressive performance in heat three.
Pin All In, who finished third, was first to show but the favourite showed superior early speed to turn in front and maintained a furious march to beat Droopys Extragud by three lengths in 27.49.
The opener saw Carol Weatherall’s The Other Boss (10/11fav) turn handy and assert down the far side on his way to scoring by three and a half lengths from Arthur Job in 27.62, with Loxleys Forest further back in third.
Very Elegant (11/4) gave the locals something to cheer about when reeling in long-time leader Brinkleys Louis for a three-quarters-of-a-length victory in 27.73, with Marlfield Oscar occupying the final qualifying spot.
Tom Heilbron got on the scoresheet when his Clodcar Rosie (9/2) caused a bit of an upset when making all by two lengths from Newinn Deejay and Flying Desire in 27.65.
The semi-finals will be over 500m and take place this Sunday. Here is the draw:
Towcester treble for Janssens
There were also opens at Towcester where Patrick Janssens landed a treble.
The Derby-winning trainer kicked off with Yahoo Megan (11/4) in the opener over 270m in 15.88, her kennelmate Romeo Ability (28.55) beat Droopys Poker in a two-dog race over 500m, while Breton Molly completed the three-timer when scoring over 712m in 42.39.
Salacres Ann (3/1) took the other sprint open on the card in 16.23, while Untold Zloty (11/2) got his head back in front for Weatherall over 500m and Richard Rees’ Zenith Sultan (11/10fav) won his four-bend contest in 28.82.
The Mattie Richards-trained Keeprhill Duke landed the maiden 712m contest at 9/2 in 43.40.
