Derby champion is back in action

Droopys Plunge heads back to the scene of his greatest triumph on Sunday when the Patrick Janssens-trained Star Sports English Derby champion trials over 270m.

Janssens is mapping out a plan to have his Classic hero primed for another crack at the world’s greatest greyhound race in a bid to add his name to a short list of back-to-back Derby champions, the last being Westmead Hawk at Wimbledon in 2005/06.

A gallant bid to join the ‘Double Derby’ club by Liam Dowling’s De Lahdedah in last year’s final at Towcester was foiled by Droopys Plunge.

The reigning champion’s trainer Janssens said: “I’d say it will be trials and one-offs only, mainly at Towcester. It’s an early-ish (Star Sports & Orchestrate) Derby this year so before we know it we’ll be there!”

Janssens will, however, be taking a team to Monmore for the upcoming Ladbrokes Winter Derby and, of course, is represented by Romeo Empire in Saturday’s Arc Cesarewitch Final at Central Park.

“We’re sending Romeo Steel and Not So Steady to Monmore,” he confirmed before saying that the Droopys Graph, winner second time up at Towcester on Sunday might be kept to the Northamptonshire venue to gain experience.

“We like him a lot. He’s owned by the same guys as Plunge and has real ability. He just needs experience and he can get that at Towcester and the Derby has to be the plan.”
