Duncan Gibson pays tribute to Nick Savva
The GBGB's Duncan Gibson has paid tribute to Nick Savva, the legendary trainer who passed away last week at the age of 91.

GBGB will support a Nick Savva tribute
Duncan Gibson, the GBGB’s senior stipendiary steward, said the Board joined the sport in mourning the loss of Nick Savva, the legendary trainer and breeder known as ‘Mr Westmead’ on Thursday, aged 91.
“So many of us grew up knowing a Westmead dog or bitch and I actually agreed what Paul Hennessy said in that each generation they seemed to get better!” said Gibson, who added that the Board would support any tribute to the nine-time Derby-winning trainer.
“I was fortunate to attend a number of Awards’ nights where Nick’s dogs would win categories and, of course, the Greyhound of the Year title a few times most notably with Westmead Hawk and any amount of British-bred honours.
“We were also delighted to support the GWA awards for Nick and Natalie, both for their Services to Greyhound Racing and Nick’s own Lifetime Achievement Award a few years back. There’s some great pictures from the night, especially.
“Quite simply, Nick was one of the true greats in greyhound racing and his like will never be seen again. His breeding and training achievements over so many decades is the stuff of legend, and Nick truly was exactly that.
“The GBGB sends its heartfelt condolences to Nick’s family at this very sad time.
“However, the memories Nick left us, especially with the equally legendary and incomparable Westmead Hawk are etched in not just greyhound folklore but in sport in general. Nick and Hawk transcended the sport during those times and, for that, greyhound racing will be eternally grateful.”
