Greyhounds Steal the Show at Wolverhampton Racecourse
The greyhounds presence proved a very popular addition to Wolverhampton Racecourse's Racing League fixture on Thursday evening.
Retired greyhounds from Home Run Hounds were at the track to meet the likes of Sky Sports Racing’s Alex Hammond and Josh Apiafi, as well as members of the ITV Racing team who were also covering the meeting.
It was all in aid of promoting the new greyhound track at Dunstall Park which is now in its final phase of development and is set to stage the Premier Greyhound Racing Oaks final on Friday, October 24.
The facility, which will be positioned inside the venue’s existing horse racing course, is on track to stage its first fixture in September and will follow the permanent closure of greyhound racing at Perry Barr Stadium in Birmingham.
Rob Crawford, commentator at Perry Barr, was at Wolverhampton and said the retired greyhounds went down a storm with the crowd.
“The retired greyhound did a meet and greet with the spectators and it was great to see so much positivity from the horseracing crowd towards the dogs,” explained Crawford.''
“Each of the retired greyhounds were allocated one of the Racing League teams and had their pictures taken with the team captains, including Mick Quinn and Leonna Mayor (below).”
“Alex (Hammond) was besotted with the greyhounds, she loves them, and so did all of the crowd.''
“It was a case of letting people know that greyhound racing is coming to Dunstall Park and there was a lot positivity from the crowd about that.”
An official date for the launch of Dunstall Park Greyhound Stadium will be confirmed in the coming weeks.
The evening coincided with the announcement that Home Run Hounds have opened a new north west branch.
Home Run Hounds North West will be the sixth branch under its banner and will be run by Jo Johnson and her team.
Home Run Hounds branches are run by volunteers and all proceeds raised go back into the dogs in their kennels.
