The Irish Greyhound Derby got underway at the weekend
The opening round of the Boylesports Irish Greyhound Derby produced its usual share of sensational runs and shocks. Bombay Pat and Rolo Tokyo were the fastest on their respective nights with 29.27 and 29.29 performances. The former just gets the nod as the performance of the week with his Friday night success.
Times have been smart at Waterford this month, something that was continued with The Other Mel last week. Her 28.23 is in the top five. times of 2025 so far and it was just the second start of her career. One of four 2024 whelps on the list this week, she is out of Irish Oaks runner-up Scooby Duchess.
The youngest on the list this week was Pretty Exile at Youghal. She has won both of her starts so far, showing a nice turn of early pace. A three-quarter sister to Timmys Hunter who made the semis of the Ladbrokes Summer Stayers at Monmore, she should have plenty of improvement to come.
Ballymac Brandan is another of the '24 club, clocking a strong 28.23 time at Tralee. He made his race debut in the heats of the Irish Sprint Cup remarkably making it all the way to the final. Last week was his 525y debut and he did not disappoint with an all the way win.
28.46 is at the top end of runs at Newbridge so far this year, with Poldarc producing that run for Rosemary Price. A strong runner over four bends, he was seen over staying trips on his two prior starts. The return to 525y saw him quickly away and gone to run riot by 17 lengths.
