Janssens eyeing up Doncaster big race double
Doncaster host their biggest meeting of the year on Saturday, and Patrick Janssens looks to hold outstanding claims of landing both of the big races, the £8,000 to the winner Yorkshire Derby and the £3,000 to the winner BGBF British Bred St Leger
Romeo Tomcat and Slick Sentinel represent Janssens in the final of the Yorkshire Derby while Romeo Empire lines up in the final of the BGBF British Bred St Leger, a race that is being run as a one off race as the competition failed to attract enough runners.
We take a look at the all open race card and try and point you in the right direction of a few winners
Sprint action kicks off the open race action at Doncaster which could go the way of Susan Watson's local runner CUSHIE ARNIE. He was a good runner up in an invitational race over course and distance last week and with the chance to lead this field out wide in the early stages, then he ought to prove tough to beat, though Ballinabola Zoey was a good winner over four bends last time out and a similar burst of early pace here could see her as the main danger.
An open looking contest here where none of the runners can either be strongly fancied or ruled out. A chance could be taken on THE FROGS LEGACY, who has been running well enough at his home track at Oxford, and with the chance of improving on last week's look round, then he may not be far away for trainer Samantha Lapidge. Shots Fired will be looking to hit the front down the middle in the early stages, and if that's the case, then he could prove to be the main danger.
Jimmy Gaskin's GRIPWELL PEG has finished runner up in her last two starts and can be hit and miss from the traps, but if she can produce one of her better breaks in this contest, it wouldn't be a surprise to see her hitting the front and if that's the case, could take all the beating. Bossy Bullet is an interesting recruit for Kirsty Grayson and moved well in a recent trial, a repeat of which would see her bang in contention at the finish.
OUR BIG BILL is still looking to land a first victory but has been running well without scoring in recent outings. He joins Kirsty Grayson and that first victory may not be far away in this field as a repeat of his recent trial could be enough to score. Slick Stravinsky makes his UK debut for Patrick Janssens and it wouldn't be a surprise to see him going close to scoring if able to hit the front on the inside rounding the opening bends.
ABSURD has won two of her three starts for Susan Watson since arriving in the UK, including when scoring in an open over course and distance last week when making all the running, and from a good looking draw out wide, she could add to that tally again with another early lead. Droopys Package finished runner up on that occasion but didn't get the clearest of passages so if gaining a clearer run here, then he could reverse the form
Ricky Overton's FOXWOOD CARTER is one of the leading greyhounds round Doncaster at present, and was a good winner in the heats of the Yorkshire Derby before being withdrawn at the semi final stage. He will be looking to hit the front out wide in the early stages and if that's the case, then he could take all the beating. Dunelm Dragon finished behind the selection on that occasion, but Ted Soppitt's runner walked out of the traps having made all the running previously, and a decent break here could see him as a danger to all
EPIC REBEL has been costly to follow in both previous starts at Doncaster, but this looks an ideal opportunity for Phil Milner's runner to lose his maiden tag here and if keeping out of trouble rounding the opening bends, he could prove too strong for these off the last bend. Ruffian Roundy can lead this field down the middle in the early stages and could build up a winning lead if able to produce another of her better breaks
£3,000 awaits the winner of the BGBF British Bred St Leger over 661m and it could prove to be a formality for the Patrick Janssens trained ROMEO EMPIRE, who has kept only the best of company over six bends and will be a very shorted priced favourite to land the spoils. He made a winning comeback over four bends last week, and an early lead on the rails could see him building a race winning lead. The race for second could be up for grabs, where Frankton Ivy was a good winner over course and distance last week, and a repeat performance could see Carol Weatherall's runner finishing best of the rest
The Yorkshire Derby is worth £8,000 to the winner, and based on the form from the first two rounds, the Patrick Janssens trained ROMEO TOMCAT will take plenty of beating. He has been hugely impressive when winning both heat and semi final by wide margins and if hitting the front at any stage of this contest, then it would take a massive run from one of his rivals to deny him. Kennelmate Slick Sentinel can show cracking early pace out wide and another of his usual fast starts could see him hitting the front out wide, and if Romeo Tomcat get's held up in the early stages, then he could take advantage and build up a winning lead. Scooby The Boss and Naochra are both capable of doing things either way for Nathan Hunt and John Flaherty and if either are close enough at any stage, then they could make their presence felt at the finish. Phil Milner's Keefill Goose and Glenn Foot's Jacktavern Chief can't be ruled out but both would probably need to hit the front rounding the opening bends for any real chance of landing the spoils
Local trainer Sean Birks doesn't have many runners in the Doncaster opens, but he could bag himself a winner in this maiden sprint contest with MUGSY. He has an outstanding draw out wide with a vacant trap inside and has been running well in graded action of late, and one of his usual fast starts can see him making all the running. Main danger could be Bombay Puzzle, who has been off since July, but Jason Smith's runner could improve on a recent trial at Towcester and could get involved at the finish if that's the case
A really good sprint contest to end the card with. STONEPARK HOFFA has been running at the top of his game in recent weeks for Savva Roberts and another of his electric breaks could see him away and gone again here. Yahoo Megan made up for a costly defeat at Yarmouth with a good win at Nottingham on Monday and the Patrick Janssens trained runner looks to be the obvious danger, especially if able to produce one of her own better breaks. Jason Smith's Westfield Bullet has also been running well in recent weeks, winning four of his last five starts, but hasn't fared well with the draw
