Happy Anniversary to Star Pelaw

It's hard to believe it is a full year since we wrote about Star Sports taking over Pelaw Grange. The difference that the team has made in a relatively short space of time has been huge. Both the track lighting and surface have been given plenty of attention and have improved the track no end.

The quality of the food and welcome that is received at the track are excellent, and if I didn't live so far away in Kent, I would be making much more frequent trips to the County Durham track myself.

After the success of the Untold Racing Stewards Cup and the SR Transport Rose Bowl, both £3,000 to the winner competitions, the track has almost £20,000 in total prize money on Saturday night, comprising of nine races with a £1,000 first prize and four with £500 on offer to the winner. In total, there is £19,300 up for grabs, with tickets available on the door.

Kim Sanzone, Head of Greyhound Operations for Star Sports has been delighted with how things have gone. "It's been a hugely successful first year at Star Pelaw. We have gone from one meeting a week to three and have plans for a fourth fixture come the middle of 2026. The track is committed to our weekly open race fixture and we welcome any trainer who wishes to join the track."

There has been lots of positivity around the track and that is shown with the volume of sponsors that Star Pelaw have attracted. Samzone is quick to praise them, "Star Pelaw would like to thank all of our sponsors for our Gala night and those who have supported us through our first year of trade."

Praise for the track is easy to find on social media, and even in 2025, that word of mouth from people who have attended and enjoyed their night out is so important for any track. It flies in the face of what some tracks have been doing but Star Pelaw are pushing to make sure that greyhound racing is still seen as a spectator sport. There is a strong catchment area and they have shown that the general public are still keen to enjoy greyhound racing.

Hopefully, year two will be an even bigger success than year one. Star Pelaw are leading the way to show what can be done with a track and they deserve every success for the effort that it being put in.
