Smith and Whitton doubles on Tuesday

Two trainers picked up a double on the opens at Suffolk Downs last night, Jason Smith and Darren Whitton.

The former led the way with Westfield Raheem who has finally seen the lightbulb come on as he has figured out what he has to do. D3 and A7 wins proceeded his open race sprint victory, trapping for the first time in his life and that made all of the difference. A three-quarter brother to Mad For Sterling, sprinting at Suffolk Downs wouldn't be the end game for him.

The double was completed by the shortest priced winner of the night, Kilbride Tractor. He got himself to the front at the opening bend and was always doing enough to hold off strong stayer Capel Razor as the pair pulled well clear. It was his third open race success.

Darren Whitton was on target in a sprint with Moaning Hearns who clocked an impressive 13.61 on a track that was subsequently rated -10. He has the two top times of the year over the trip now after setting a new fastest of the year last week, taking the scalp of Roanna Mamba in the process last night.

His brace started with Moaning Gentile. The veteran picked up a couple of sprint wins at the track just before Christmas, adding to those with a 388m success. He banged out in front and never looked like he was going to be caught.

The step up to six bends for the first time worked well for Kevin Boon's Farneys Tearaway. He is another who had a pair of December wins at the venue before he was off on his travels. Things didn't quite go to plan elsewhere but the return to this track saw him comfortably on top from an early stage.

There was a six-bend win for Jason Ray's Savana Sprite. She has been a touch unfortunate to bump into a stronger stayer in each of her first two starts over the distance but gained her just reward last night. Another to get out in front early on, she put her rivals to the sword to pick up her fourth open win at the track, over three different trips.

One final 548m contest on the night went the way of Joy Wild for Laura Pruhs. It looked for all the world like it was going to be a Whitton treble on the night as Blackheath Charm pinged out to set the fractions but Pruhs's runner was a 716m winner at the track when with Kevin Boon and her superior stamina won her the day late on.

Yarmouth track champion Laugh Alot was also in winning action on the card for Jane Craske. It was a race strong on quality but the veteran was away and gone before her rivals had a chance to get involved.
