Monmore racing manager Tony Williamson has expanded on the decision of the track's stewards to mark Slingshot Poppy as 'awkward' in her heat of the Ladbrokes Gold Cup at the Wolverhampton venue on Saturday.
Brian Fairbairn's brilliantly fast Angel of The North winner, the Towcester sprint track record holder and second only to Droopys Shearer in terms of fastest ever times clocked for Newcastle's 480m, had a coming together with heat five winner Goldcash Warrior as they swung for home.
"She definitely came in and there was contact but the stewards watched the replay in the company of Poppy's trainer Brian Fairbairn and felt it was a reaction of a bitch under pressure to a slight shoulder barge from Nathan's (Hunt) runner Goldcash Warrior.
"These are always tough decisions to make - you are damned if you do, damned if you don't - but we felt on balance the right decision was made to mark Slingshot Poppy as awkward."
