Karen McMillan, the general manager at Romford continues to push hard for signatures on the petition to challenge the proposed ban on greyhound racing in Wales.
McMillan pulling no punches with the Welsh racing petition
Karen McMillan, the go-ahead general manager at Entain track Romford, has welcomed the increased effort surrounding the petition to challenge the proposed ban on greyhound racing in Wales.
The petition, which was fast approaching the key 10,000 signatures mark before non-UK residents who had signed had their names controversially removed, is now heading back towards that level - the number required to see the ban debated in the Senedd. It is now back past 9,000 - but with the real number much higher, insists McMillan.
“The goalposts were moved significantly last month and there does seem some hypocrisy and one rule for us and one rule for others when it comes to this petition, but we've rallied and now support is growing among the tracks, albeit not before time! More really need to get involved and getting the message out there like this is helpful," added McMillan.
The Romford GM revealed she had a conversation with Ben Keith, owner of Star Sports, who has now urged staff at the company - including at the firm's Star Pelaw track - to double down on efforts.
"Ben has been pushing this for a while and agrees we just need to keep reminding people to sign the petition - and it's been great for Romford and Pelaw to come together on this. We might be on different sides as such when it comes to media rights, but are coming together for the good of greyhound racing as a whole.
"We don't need to be reminded that there is a small minority of people out there, albeit very vocal, who want to damage not just this fantastic sport but other connected industries.
"They are blinded by bygone impressions of how greyhounds - and horses for that matter - are treated and my door is always open to those who want to see how modern greyhound racing exists and operates - and how our gorgeous dogs are so well looked after during their racing careers and especially afterwards.
"The greyhound breed is cherished and loved by us."
