Trainer Chat- Cahill sends team of five in search for second Derby
Back in 2017, Hove trainer Seamus Cahill was responsible for providing the biggest priced winner of the Greyhound Derby since Tartan Khan landed the 1975 running at White City at 25/1, when Astute Missile obliged at 28/1 in the first Derby Final to be held at Towcester
This year Cahill sends a team of five to the Northamptonshire venue in his bid to land a second Derby success, with Dark Madam, Droopys Invent, Kevins Rocket, Missile One and Never Say No representing the Keston based trainer.
Best Chance: “Our best chance would be with Missile One. He’s an older dog, more experienced dog and he has ran well at Towcester. He won a Trial Stakes there in early April by 9 lengths doing 29.00, and he won well at Hove at the weekend, so he goes there in good form
Surprise Package: “That would be Dark Madam. She’s only ever ran in Category One’s and she’s only had eight races. She was runner up in the Brighton Belle at Hove at the weekend, she won her Semi Final of the Puppy Oaks at Towcester in December but found trouble in the Final, and she made the Semi Final of the Monmore Puppy Derby having won her heat.
Breeding wise, she is out of Lemon Stacey, who is the same mother of Cochise who came third in the Final a couple of years back, so she should be getting stronger. She’s had a few minor injuries along the way but hopefully now she’s turned the corner”
If you could train any other dog in the Derby, who would it be: “That would be Bombay Pat. He looks like he’s been laid out for the Derby and was very impressive on Sunday. He’s nice and fresh going into the Derby and I think he’s a very fast dog, I like him a lot”
Favourite Derby Memory or Highlight: “That’s an easy one, that’s winning the Final in 2017 with Astute Missile. With everything that had been going on in the weeks and months running up to the Derby and then losing my daughter during it, it meant so much to win it that year. The Derby was what kept us going”
What would it mean to win the Derby again: “It’s the pinnacle of the sport, and it’s everyone’s dream to win it whether you’re an owner or a trainer, so to win it a second time would be incredible for us”
