Aladdin takes off at Nottingham

Droopys Aladdin (4/7fav) smashed the 480m track record in a trial stakes for the ARC Birmingham Cup at Nottingham on Monday evening.

Just a week after Romeo Ability set new figures for the distance with a 28.06 (+60) run, Droopys Aladdin went round in a stunning 27.93 (+60) as he hacked up by seven and a quarter lengths from Cul Na Braithre.

Mike Burton’s dog broke nicely from trap two before showing his smart early speed to quickly open up a very healthy lead. He kept extending his lead and shaved a huge13 spots off the previous record.

Burton completed a double when his Droopys Superstar justified 1/4 favouritism by the same winning margin in another trial stakes for the 480m event.

Despite a slow start, the September 22 son of Droopys Sydney showed enough pace to rail round in a prominent pitch and hit the front off the second bend.

He maintained a furious march thereafter to race a long way clear and went on to stop the clock at 28.37 (+60).

Chelms Bear (4/7fav) also ran out a facile winner over 500m as he posted a flying 29.03 (+60), just three spots outside March On Freddie’s track record.

The Craig Morris-trained runner turned close to pace before surging past Ballymac Odin down the back straight and impressively stretching clear to beat that rival by five and three-quarter lengths.

Droopys Flotilla (9/4) edged out Very Elegant in a thrilling trial stakes for the PGR St Leger over 730m.

Thor Odinson was first to show but Droopys Flotilla took it up off the second bend and scooted clear of the chasing pack. Very Elegant began to motor late on and laid down a big challenge, but Nathan Hunt’s winner had enough in hand to hold on by a neck in 44.33 (+90).

Wolf Gold (9/4) struck over 500m for Jill Llewellin as he came home clear to score in 29.61 (+60), while Jean Liles got on the scoresheet when her Mustang Razor (9/2) landed the sprint in 18.26 (+20).
