Freddie could prove to be the value call in top class Juvenile
All eyes of the greyhound world will be firmly fixed on Towcester at 4.07 when the six runners enter the traps for the £10,000 to the winner Time Greyhound Nutrition Juvenile with the sensational Bockos Diamond the focus of much of that attention. Graham Holland’s superstar, winner of the Irish Derby in November, is unbeaten in his last 15 starts and has flown round Towcester in a couple of recent trials , but in a race of this quality, the best odds of 5/6 on offer doesn’t appeal in his first race since November, and although he is the likely winner, I think MARCH ON FREDDIE at 10/1 could prove to be a value alternative each way selection.
With plenty of early pace in this field, March on Freddie is likely to be at the back of the pack into the opening bends, but with possible trouble on the inside with Droopys Plunge and Proper Heiress likely to be heading towards the rails with Wicky Ned also likely to be pacing up into the opening bends, March On Freddie looks set for a clear run out wide,
As the only runner sure to be staying on in the later stages, he could prove too strong for these on the long run for home. He is no stranger to big race success having won the Jenningsbet Puppy Classic at Nottingham in August, taking in the track record on the way and this track looks as though it will suit him well. It would be foolish to overlook the claims of Wicky Ned and Proper Heiress, both multiple Category One competition winners and if either of those two runners were to hit the front on the inside, then their own claims of scoring will increase hugely.
Above all else, hopefully all six runners come off the track safe and sound as we have a race to savour.
The other big race on the card at 4.44 is the final of the BetGoodwin and J R Racing Maiden Derby over 500m worth £10,000 to the winner which sees a strong challenge from across the Irish Sea with three runners from Ireland lining up, but the UK also have three in the final and it could go the way of Trap 3 BURROWS CHARM. Trained by Hove trainer Jason Heath, Burrows Charm has won two from two since arriving in the UK and has improved with every look on the clock round the Northamptonshire circuit.
He has shown fantastic early pace in his heat and semi-final when making all the running, and he may well have more to come so if leading round the opening bends ahead of fast starting Ballybough Nutz, he could hold off the late bursts of Lennies Desire and Hello Diego.
Elsewhere on the card, with the Derby starting in less than three week’s time, there are a number of StarSports Derby Trial Stakes taking place. The star attraction there is the Graham Holland trained CHEAP SANDWICHES, who finished runner up in the final of the Irish Derby at Shelbourne last November behind Bockos Diamond and has taken to Towcester well in a couple of trials, showing cracking early pace, so could prove tough to beat if hitting the front in the 3.29 contest.
Holland also has Yorkie Ollie running for him in the following race at 3.49 and was well fancied when making all the running over course and distance but AVONGATE VENUS is unbeaten in seven starts over 500m here, when running at the top of her game between May to September last year. Having blown the cobwebs away at home track Doncaster in her first start since November last week, she could be set to resume her winning ways here.
START THE MIXER, trained by Frank Gray lines up in a maiden contest at 4.26, having stayed on well in both heat and semi-final of the Maiden Derby, and he could get his head in front here with another strong burst rounding the final bends
Janssens to continue recent Sheffield domination
With four runners in this year’s BresBet Gymcrack Final all in the top four in the betting, trainer Patrick Janssens looks to have this year’s final at his mercy and the £17,500 winners prize could go the way of the unbeaten DROOPYS TRADE. He has won both starts at Sheffield since arriving in the UK and having made all the running in both heat and semi-final, he could again be out and gone again.
Romeo Tomcat finished runner-up on both occasions, but he looked to be a touch unlucky when not getting a clear passage at the second bend and could go close if in a decent position rounding the final bends of this 4.24 contest. Romeo Ability also landed both heat and semi-final when leading in the early stages and his chance of landing the hat-trick will increase if able to hit the front again round the opening bends.
Elsewhere on the card, Janssens looks set to be on target in the previous race at 4.04 where ROMEO STEEL is expected to come home in front at very short odds, and although unappealing as a single bet, he could be involved in Janssens doubles and trebles along with NOT SO SLOW, who goes in the 5.01 sprint contest. A slow start proved costly to his double claims last time out having made all the running previously and a repeat of that winning run could see Janssens taking a clean sweep of the races he contests.
VELVET MIKEY lines up for Doncaster trainer Sean Parker in the 4.42 contest over 480m and has a cracking draw out wide in Trap 6 with a vacant trap on his inside. He has been off a month but would have blown the cobwebs away with a trial at Doncaster and if turning the opening bends in a handy position, then he can prove too strong in the later stages.
