BGBF British Bred Cup starts on Friday

Liz Mort, chair of the British Greyhound Breeders Forum (BGBF), is looking forward to upcoming British-bred events - starting with the heats of the BGBF British Bred Cup at Sunderland on Friday.

Three heats of an all-aged 450m event will be staged alongside heats of the Arena Racing Company Puppy Trophy for a cracking night's open racing at the Wearside venue - and over the next two weeks given the first four home in the British-bred event will make it through to the semis, with the finals of both £7,500-to-the-winner comps on Friday, June 26.

Mort is also eyeing another notable Britsh-bred event next month when Dunstall Park stages the BGBF British Bred Puppy Cup over 480m, the Category One event having switched from Oxford to Wolverhampton Racecourse.

Heats of that event take place on Saturday, July 4, with the semi-finals a week later and the £10,000-to-the-winner decider on Saturday, July 18.

"It's going to be a good few weeks for British-bred runners, with Sunderland hosting an all-aged event starting this week, and then Dunstall Park next month.

"The Dunstall Park competition is for British-bred pups whelped August 2024 or younger and is one of our major competitions."

Taking of which, Mort was a guest at Towcester on Star Sports & Orchestrate English Derby Final night on Saturday and helped with the presentation for the main British-bred event on the night.

She said: "Thanks to Towcester for a truly memorable Derby and, especially, for once again hosting the BGBF TruFrame British Bred Champion Stakes.

"It was so important, especially in a year like this when Ireland dominated the English Derby - and congratulations to our friends across the Irish Sea, but most of all to the Hennessy family.

"But from our point of view it was well done to Romeo Force and his trainer Kelly Hodson for their success in the BGBF TruFrame British Bred Champion Stakes, which followed that of his brother Romeo Ability for the Janssens and Firmager team in the Derby Plate."
