Cheap Sandwiches and Wicky Ned set to clash again at Shelbourne

The 2025 Time Greyhound Nutrition International at Dundalk was a superb contest with just over two lengths covering the entire field as they hit the line.

It was a bold move from Jimmy Fenwick to head to Dundalk without a look for Wicky Ned but he come away well. He moved off a touch at the opening bend but he lost absolutely nothing in defeat here behind a dual Derby finalist.

"We're so proud of him, we nearly pulled the win off" Fenwick told us, typically magnanimous in defeat, quick to congratulate Cheap Sandwiches, the Bark Wahlberg Syndicate and Graham Holland.

All roads now lead to a tilt at the Boylesports Irish Derby at Shelbourne for Wicky Ned, where this level of form would give him every chance of a deep run.

Cheap Sandwiches didn't trap, which with a short enough run to the opening bend, saw him in a tricky looking position early on. Nudged wide at the quarter mark, he headed into the second bend with only Ballinabola Joe behind him.

The third bend saw Cheap Sandwiches looming up on the outside but he had to dig deep to beat the British raider who had briefly had his momentum checked with Callaway Knegare right on his heels as they started off down the back.

As a contest, the race was not over as the field turned for home, Ballinabola Joe another to make a huge amount of ground down the back before his run just flattened out in the last few strides. He finished third in a deep field and connections will surely be looking to Shelbourne for him as well.

There was an official margin of half a length for the 2024 Irish Derby runner-up over Wicky Ned at the line with Ballinabola Joe a short head further back.

Callaway Knegare would come home in fourth. He was third in the Irish Derby final last year, adding another layer of form to this race. He is one who was not helped by the short run to the bend. Lemon Joey will have surprised a few when trapping out and heading into the opening bend in front. While Daleroad Duke was last to cross the line, he was not beaten far in a superb field.
