Sunday Open Report – Sheffield, Towcester and Star Pelaw

The Owlerton Stadium Standard at 4.04 saw Acomb Felix start as the 4/9 favourite. The March 2021 son of Hiya Butt made a moderate break but then paced up well into the corner and railed inside Tricky Wiggles (T5) and Distant Hiker from T6. Felix hit the front and kicked a couple clear down the back straight and favourite backers were sitting pretty. Off the final bend Distant Hiker drew level and Tricky Wiggles challenged between the pair but Felix stuck his neck out and won by a head and short head. That’s now five on the bounce around Sheffield for the Kevin Ferguson-trained runner.

There was a huge shock in the Owlerton Stadium Super Stayers  at 4.42, with Geelo Minty landing the prize at 7/1, beating Garfiney Blaze who was sent off the 1/12 race favourite. Geelo Minty turned third and showed huge pace between the fifth and sixth bends and hit the front. Garfiney Blaze attempted to follow Minty but was crowded at key stages and the winner had flown.

Nutty on target at Towcester

The Towcester Stayers at 3.29 went to the Mark Wallis-trained Bombay Nutty from T4 in 42.51. The February 2023 son of Broadstand Bono was sent off the 1/5 favourite for the race and made light work of the opposition, making every yard to record a four-length victory. Division two of the Stayers  at 4.26 saw Romeo Aragon (9/2) beat Craft Prospero (5/6) in 43.51. The Laurence Tuffin-trained railer led from the fifth bend and held off a late challenge from the odds-on favourite.

Tax Evader (Evens) took the Towcester Maiden at 3.59 in impressive style, making all in 29.23. There was also a win on the card for Romeo Steel who bolted up in the Towcester Standard to reward those that took the 1/5 on offer from bookmakers.

Open Race Action from Star Pelaw

Over at Star Pelaw five open races took place on an ultra-competitive card at the northeast venue. Killeford Hanna (3/10) made light work of the opposition in the Vicky Dobson 30th Birthday Stayers Trophy at 7.42, making all in 36.11. A little later on, Metta took the Star Sports 435 Maiden Trophy at 7.58 leading off the second bend to record a win in 25.89.

The second maiden of the night at 8.16 went to No Brakes at 4/7 as the May 2023 daughter of Ballymac Bolger led off the fourth bend and went on to clock 25.65 winning by over two lengths. The final open race on the card went to Barnfield Duke, who sent favourite backers home happy with an even-money win as he led late on to land the Star Pelaw Sprint Trophy.
